Before we started a detail business
Before detailing countless vehicles for countless, wonderful customers in the Yuba City, CA, Yuba-Sutter area, I (Ken, the owner) was detailing vehicles for a small used car dealership in Chico, CA to support my family (Me, my wife Caryn, my 1-2 year old twin boys). I would drive every morning at 8am to start my job at 9am, and leave around 6-7pm, to be home at the "early" hours of 7-8pm
I was gone for work, from my beautiful newlywed and twin baby boys for essentially 12 hours. There is nothing wrong with working for 12 hours, daily, if I was making good enough money to support them, and eventually thrive. However, $13 an hour (though it was good enough for just me), was simply not enough to feed my family and waste all of that valuable time to do so.
Now, I'm not alone on this, I'm sure. Everybody seemingly starts in this similar position of struggle. The difference between those that eventually make it out of practically poverty, and those that perpetually stay there, is a mindset to improve. Barely making the rent month by month, and relying on government programs such as WIC, is not a place to be in, as the man of the house. People that pull their families out of poverty / struggle / difficulty all end up making a FINAL decision to better their lives.
Everybody can agree (those of us who have parents from other countries), that our parents made a FINAL decision to better their lives. It is a brave risk to move a family and start fresh in a foreign country. It is certainly less of a risk to make the decision to take control, and start a business, in the most capitalistic, entrepreneur-friendly country that the world has ever seen.
Detail Pros established in 2014
In 2014, I made the decision to start GO GREEN WASH N' WAX. We eventually changed the name to what it is now - Detail Pros, but before that, we were rolling with GO GREEN for about 2 years. The 2 years with the name GO GREEN WASH N' WAX, and even the 2 years immediately post GO GREEN (Detail Pros), was certainly a huge struggle.
We had to drum up work from virtually no where. No one knew about GO GREEN/us, and no one used us for their detailing needs. No biggie, because without this struggle of not working everyday and making a living, I would never know the difference, and thus, would never seek to improve. If we were working everyday, we might have just made enough to be and stay content. It is the struggle day after day, over the span of years, that allows for people like myself to decide that enough is enough, and pull it together.
Using the internet as an advantage
We started with a website. Google is the only thing that people use now, to find what they are looking for. Within google/the internet, there is yelp, facebook, youtube, etc. Back then, this understanding was still something to just simply consider, and not really take that seriously. But as somebody who didn't have the resources as someone else with a shop, and as someone else with years of being in business - knowing people, I had to make our website an advantage.
Now, I understand, a website is not going to do the detailing for us, neither is a website going to collect revenue for us. However, a website is the backbone of a company's internet identity. Even with a business based out of a 1999 green Ford Expedition, we could be found just as easily as a brick and mortar business, and look more appealing than said brick and mortar business. In this age, a decent website is necessary. Back then, a crummy website was the norm. We used this as our advantage. We leveraged people's lack of understanding that an online presence, an aesthetic online presence, will be a determining factor for a lot of buyers.
Think about your buying habits today. We all use the internet to buy things. Our family uses Amazon prime more than it does Wal-Mart. And even if the product is readily available at Wal-Mart or Target, we use online reviews to make our final buying decisions in store (and we still may even decide to wait for the wonderful UPS truck to deliver our Prime goodness).
Staying humble and using our advantages
Regardless of where we started and how we started, it is our ability to understand that people want to put us out of business, that keeps us in business and pushing forward. We use every advantage that we have (our understanding of brand and aesthetics, our understanding of the internet, our understanding of face to face sales, our understanding of customer service, our understanding of NOT KNOWING EVERYTHING, our cute kids, my cute wife, our skills with photo and video and humor, etc), because all it takes is for someone with our drive and different advantages and using them, to compete. (We also use our minds to never focus on competition, but rather customers and their needs, so good luck there!)
